When my Latvian friends decided to visit Georgia fourth time, they asked me to find a quite cheap and not far-away-from-capital wine tour with possibility to try real traditional Georgian wine made in “kvevri”. Fortunately my Georgian colleague – sommelier Keti Jurkhadze know a good place where to go. Iago’s Winery situated in the small village Chardakhi, approximately 10 km from Mtskheta, so after visiting this beautiful place we went to the Iago’s Winery for discovery.
That’s really was discovery – very simple house, very goodhearted people – Iago and his wife Nino. We paid 30 lari each and got a compact wine tour, taste 2 wine varieties – Saperavi and Kisi (my favorite!) very tasty lunchand spent beautiful time discussing with owner’s family. My friends are more in Saperavi, but I bought a bottle of this very rare wine Kisi. Wine of this private winery has a bio-certificate.
If you are in Georgia and do not plan to go to Kakheti region, it is very good idea to make a one day tour to Mtskheta and Gori and visit this winery, but you have to contact to Iago before by email: email@example.com
By the way, I was very surprised of 2 things: at first, that this man is a director of annual New Wine Festival and Wine Club; at second, that his wife is only the woman in the Georgia, who has her own wine with the name Mandili and manages all the process of wine producing from the very beginning till the end.
